Entering the Arena
Prior to listening to Coming Home, I’m not sure I knew the WNBA existed. I knew there were “professional basketball” players but if you’d asked me what that meant, I’m not sure how I would have answered. So when I say I’m a “new fan,” boy, do I mean it!
After a failed attempt to see Brittney Griner play in nearby Seattle, I forgot all about the WNBA. Two years later, I heard chatter about a Portland team forming. I discovered I’d joined the Portland Fire email list when I started receiving emails about tickets! games! events! One time I clicked through, thinking, “Hey, I wanna support women’s sports and go watch these ladies.” Tickets were starting at $450. That’s a bit too deer for my budget but what I didn’t grasp was that $450 was for season tickets, not just one game. Again, when I say “new fan,” I truly mean it!
I found myself at Moda Center through a stroke of scheduling luck. May 18th, Fire vs the Sun (Birttney playing!), child gone on a field trip, husband and I looking for something fun to do, resale tickets for Center Court at $88 each. There was literally not a way to say no to any of it. And that night we got home and I thought, “Will it be the WNBA, something I didn’t even really know existed just six hours ago, be what brings me out of perimenopausal/midlife funk?” While the answer to that remains to be seen, this blog is one way I’m trying to find out.
